Hardware
The physical kit. What each machine does is on the infrastructure page; what I'm building with it is on projects. Back to systems.
Machines
| Specification | |
|---|---|
| Pinky | Ryzen 7 3800XT, 8 cores / 16 threads, 64 GB. Two discrete GPUs — an Intel Arc A770 (16 GB) and an NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti (16 GB). Separate NVMe for container data, so a full root disk can't take the containers with it. |
| 3 × Raspberry Pi | One each for monitoring (Josie), Home Assistant, and Pi-hole. Modest on purpose — the jobs that need to keep working while Pinky is down. |
| Mac mini | Apple silicon. Exists because some things only run on macOS, and because it does hardware transcoding without complaint. |
| MacBook Pro | M3 Pro. The machine I actually work on, and the one that travels. |
Storage
A NAS for bulk data, plus a TerraMaster direct-attached enclosure hanging off the Mac mini over Thunderbolt and shared from there. Two drives recovered from the retired Unraid array are being folded back in.
Keyboards
A split keyboard with home row modifiers — hold a letter on the home row and it becomes a modifier, tap it and it's still a letter. That's done in software by Kanata, which needs a virtual HID driver pinned to a matching major version.
Devices
| 2 × Echo Show 5 | Second generation, MediaTek. Being moved onto LineageOS to run Home Assistant as bedside dashboards. |
| ESP32 with PoE | Wired Ethernet, two reed switches. Replacing the Wi-Fi garage controller whose radio link was destroyed by the door it was attached to. |
| Garage opener | An ordinary sectional door opener. Everything interesting here is about measuring its actual position rather than assuming it. |
Network
UniFi throughout. Details on the infrastructure page.
